Course Description

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic principles of environmental microbiology. The course aims to provide comprehensive background knowledge on basic microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbial ecology, biotechnology and biodegradation/bioremediation. In particular, the topics examined in the course include: basic microbiology, structure and function of microbial cells, microbial metabolism, molecular microbiology (genetic information flow and reproduction), microbial development, methods of microbial ecology, environmental biotechnology (bioremediation, wastewater treatment, etc.) and microbial analysis (instruments, analytical tools and techniques), with emphasis on molecular diagnostics.
