Biography

Dr. Giorgios Metaxas earned a PhD title in Psychology from the University of Cyprus (2015) and a specialist diploma (BSc & MSc) in Psychology from the Moscow State University named after Lomonosov (2006).

Dr. Metaxas is an Associate Professor of the MSc Programme in Addiction Counselling: Prevention and Intervention of the School of Education and Sciences at the Philips University. He is a registered counselling psychologist (No 108) with specialization in Neurocognitive Assessment (Metaxas, 2015), registered supervisor of the Cyprus Institute for Psychotherapy, registered trainer for the Structural Assessment tool SAPROF (Structural Assessment of Protective Factors – Van der Hoeven Kliniek in cooperation with the Pompe Kliniek and the University of Maastricht), with experience in preparing and standardization of psychometric tools (translation and standardization of Eyes Test – adults, Faces Test & Cambridge Mindreading (CAM) Face-Voice Battery – autism research centre, www.autismresearchcentre.com/arc_tests, authored tool for the assessment of emotional expressions “Speed Movies” and assessment of practical language skills – “Proverbs” – Neurocognitive Lab University of Cyprus), participated as a researcher in the team of adaptation and standardization of the Boston Naming Test, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), Word fluency COWAT, Trail making Α-Β, Symbol digit Modality Test, Logical Memory, HVLT (Neurocognitive Lab University of Cyprus), authored a methodology of assessing pictograms of children and adults (Μεταξάς, 2010), participated in the team of adaptation and standardization in Greek language of the SAPROF, participated as a coordinator of the Program “Community Psychology – Psychologists in prevention of Addictions  (implemented by the Pan Cyprian Psychological Association and funded by the National Addictions Authority, 2010-2014). 

Dr. Metaxas has served in several national councils and committees on psychology, psychotherapy and mental health. The Cyprus Council of Ministers appointed him to the position of member of the Cyprus Registration Board for Psychologists (2020 – 2023). He is a founding member of the Cyprus Institute of Psychotherapy (2008-present), member of the Board (2009-2016 and 2021-today) and President (2018-2020) of the Pan Cyprian Psychological Association.

Dr. Metaxas has substantial experience as a Counselling Psychologist and in the field of teaching psychology and psychotherapy, as well as in the field of research and development of prevention and intervention programs. He has served as a Research and Development Officer (2008-2018) and as a Social Services Officer (2018-current) in Social Welfare Services of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, Supervisor of practicing Clinical and Counselling Psychologists in Social Welfare Services (2017 – 2019),  Researcher in Neurocognitive lab in the University of Cyprus (2008 – 2010), Counselling Psychologist in the Municipal Counselling Centre of Strovolos Municipality (2007 – 2011), teaching the course  “ethics in psychotherapy ” and “assessment of emotional and cognitive skills” in the Cyprus Institute of Psychotherapy (2011 – 2015).
